In September 2025, Trevelyan Middle School was proud to open the Acorn Base! The Acorn Base is a resourced provision, which provides support for up to 10 students with a primary need relating to Cognition and Learning and who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The Acorn Base forms part of the school’s inclusive offer to ensure children with additional needs can access appropriate, high-quality education within their local mainstream setting.

Our learning space

The Acorn Base is designed for students whose needs can be met within a mainstream school environment but who require a resourced setting as part of their provision. All pupils are integrated into a mainstream form with their peers, in line with our inclusion ethos, but personalised timetables are implemented according to individual need. Students who receive teaching and support in the Acorn Base are fully included within the school community. Their access to mainstream lessons will be determined by their individual needs, provision requirements and progress, as outlined in their EHCP. By the end of Key Stage 3 they should be accessing 50% of mainstream lessons. It’s important to know that RPs are not separate schools or Special Needs Units. They are part of the main school and help children get the most out of a mainstream education.

Support that meets each learner where they are

As well as being part of the mainstream school, the students who are part of our base receive the benefits of:

  • Small class sizes
  • High staffing ratios
  • Specialist teaching and support
  • Individualised programmes aligned with each student’s EHCP
  • SALT and OT interventions
  • SEMH interventions
  • Individualised and bespoke PSHE sessions
  • Opportunities to build social skills
  • Bespoke designated learning facilities and space

Who we are

The Acorn base has been created at the heart of the school, and its location reflects our inclusive ethos and aims for the students to know they belong, and are part of, the wider school community. Our students move around the school independently with their mainstream peers and we have the same high expectations of behaviour. The Acorn Base is a quiet, safe place where our students can relax, talk, and feel supported. There is a main teaching classroom, which provides a calm and nurturing learning environment, where most lessons are taught in the base. We also have a smaller intervention room where work can be completed by up to 4 children at a time. This space can also be used to deliver our SALT and SEMH interventions. There is another room in which more active learning can take place as well as offering a calm corner, reading area and sensory circuits. We are in the process of creating an outdoor learning environment to enhance the base further.

Admissions

To the Acorn Base

Admission to the Acorn Base is not managed through the school’s general admissions process.

  • Places are allocated exclusively by the local authority, in consultation with Pioneer Educational Trust.
  • Only children and young people with an EHCP identifying Cognition and Learning as the primary need will be considered.
  • Students admitted to the Acorn Base may be offered places above the school’s Published Admission Number (PAN).
  • These additional places apply only to the Acorn Base and do not alter the PAN for mainstream admissions. The mainstream PAN will remain at 150. The Acorn Base will mean there are an additional 10 pupils above the mainstream PAN. Pupils for the Acorn Base may be admitted in Years 5, 6, 7 or 8.
  • Priority for placement is given to children residing within the local authority’s catchment area, subject to the suitability of the provision for the child’s needs.

Parents cannot apply directly to Trevelyan Middle School for a place in the Acorn Base. All enquiries must be directed to the local authority’s SEND Admissions team.

Helpful information and links:

A child or young person has a special educational need if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her.

A learning difficulty or disability is a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others the same age. Special educational provision means educational provision that is  additional to, or different from, that made generally for others of  the same age in a mainstream setting in England.
