Physical Education

Pupils' appreciate the wide range of opportunities for activities, outside of lessons, and are very keen to be involved in them. Ofsted 2008

Key Stage 2

Our pupils are introduced to the basic skills encompassing the six main areas of study stipulated in the National Curriculum. These are

  • Dance
  • Games
  • Gymnastics
  • Outdoor and Adventurous activities
  • Athletics
  • Swimming

We encourage our children to be physically active. On the games side, they continually practise the basic skills of running, catching, throwing and kicking, through the use of small-sided team games, relays and skill specific sessions.

We continually stress the importance of teamwork, cooperation and fair play.

Pupils develop creative and performing skills both in dance and gymnastics, with health and safety stressed throughout but particularly in swimming and athletics.

We encourage pupils to solve simple problems they encounter in the course of their physical activities, and to evaluate the success or failure of their actions.

Key Stage 3

Our pupils continue to experience and develop the skills involved in Dance, Games, Gymnastics and Athletics. In games, they participate in the major sports of:

  • Football
  • Rugby
  • Netball
  • Cricket
  • Rounders
  • Tennis

Practices take on a more complex and involved format with the emphasis on quality of performance. Team and individual strategies, tactics and more complicated rules are introduced.

We develop further pupils' creative and performing skills in Dance and Gymnastics, and they experience a considerable amount of partner and group work. More complex gymnastic moves are taught with pupils again being asked to concentrate on the quality of their performance.

Finally we teach our pupils to appreciate the benefits and value of physical activity and to take greater responsibility for their actions. They should also show initiative, commitment, fairness and consideration for others.
