Music

A particular strength of the school’s work is the excellent range of clubs and activities on offer outside lessons, particularly in sports, music, art and drama, which make a very strong contribution to pupils’ good spiritual, social, moral and cultural development and personal well-being. Trevelyan is an Associate Arts College, linked to The Windsor Boys' School.

Music plays a central part in the life of the school and we are justly proud of the achievements of our orchestra, choir, brass band and steel band as well as our regular musical productions. Pupils compete each year for the titles of Young Musician, Singer and Composer of the Year, and we participate regularly in festivals arranged by the Windsor Schools Liaison Group.

All our pupils spend some time each week in the Music Room, following a progressive course that is geared to the demands of the National Curriculum.

The work is organised in a series of units, each lasting half a term or a whole term. Ongoing assessment is built into this scheme so that progress is monitored in the basic skills, as highlighted in the National Curriculum, and in the transfer documentation that is passed to each pupil's next school.

Much of the work is practical, using a range of instruments, and is done in groups.

Instrumental lessons form a vital part of music at Trevelyan, complementing the work that is done in class. The prominent part played by former Trevelyan pupils in musical activities at the Windsor Upper Schools testifies to the valuable groundwork that is done during these four important years.

Throughout the School

In Year 5 pupils start to explore the basic concepts of organised sound, in compositions using voice and body sounds, together with simple percussion instruments.

In Year 6 they start to refine their compositions, notating them with their own graphic symbols as well as conventional notation.

The emphasis in Year 7 is on the importance of structure, pattern and harmony in composition work, and there is greater use of more sophisticated equipment including keyboards and, increasingly, suitable computer programs.

Year 8 offers scope for pupils to develop their instrumental skill in composing, performing, arranging and improvisation, with much of the work linked to a broad study of popular styles such as Jazz and Blues.

In all four years progress is monitored by regular assessment and pupils are encouraged to listen to their own and others' compositions with a critical ear. It is to be hoped that at the end of their four years at Trevelyan, pupils will have developed the technical assurance and general self-confidence to enable them to take full advantage of all future opportunities.
