
Geography
We teach Geography as a separate subject in mixed ability form groups. Geography follows the National Curriculum at Key Stages 2 and 3.
Year 5
- Development of Geographical skills - survey in and around the school buildings, including scale, key, plans, map and compass directions.
- Knowledge and understanding of places - The British Isles.
- Settlements, including size, types and functions, both locally and nationally.
- The mountain environment.
- Geographical enquiry and knowledge, and the understanding of patterns and processes.
- A week's field trip - a comparison between inland and coastal localities.

Year 6
- Further Geographical skills, including looking at latitude and longitude. Use of atlases and globes, physical and political maps.
- Knowledge and understanding of places, including Europe and the wider world.
- Knowledge and understanding of patterns and processes. A look at the water cycle and rivers, with a detailed study of the River Severn.
- A look at a location in a country that is less economically developed.
Year 7
- Settlements.
- Geographical skills.
- Tectonic processes and their effects on landscape and people, with the study of earthquakes and volcanoes.
- The football business.
- Population.

Year 8
- Geomorphological processes and their effects on landscapes and people, including rivers and flooding.
- A country study: France.
- Ecosystems: how physical and human processes influence vegetation..
- A country study: Kenya.
Resources
We have a wide range of up-to-date books, photographs, compasses, maps of varying scales, globes and plans, all readily available for pupils to use.
The local environment, a field trip and visit to the Thames Barrier offer opportunities for a flexible learning approach.
We also use ICT and video material when appropriate.
Cross-curricular links with, for example, Science, Maths and French let our pupils appreciate Geography in the wider perspective of the whole school curriculum.
Geography is taught as a separate subject in mixed-ability groups. Pupils have one lesson a week in Years 5 and 6, and two a week in Years 7 and 8. Geography at Trevelyan follows Key Stages 2 and 3 of the National Curriculum.
